KENNESAW, Ga. | Oct 29, 2025
The Kennesaw State 免费福利一区二区三区 Department of Theatre and Performance Studies (TPS), part of the Geer College of the Arts, will present鈥疊lood Wedding鈥痓y Federico Garc铆a Lorca, translated by Lillian Groag,鈥疦ovember 6鈥16, 2025, in the Stillwell Theater.
Directed by鈥疉ssistant Professor Marlon Andrew Burnley, the production reimagines Lorca鈥檚 tragic masterpiece through a lens of rural Americana, exploring timeless themes of love, repression, and destiny against a backdrop inspired by the director鈥檚 own experiences in the mountain communities of Montana.
鈥淎t its core,鈥疊lood Wedding鈥痠s about the collision between desire and duty,鈥 said Burnley. 鈥淟orca鈥檚 world 鈥 like ours 鈥 is filled with people who long for freedom but are bound by family, class, and tradition. By setting this story in a modern rural landscape, we鈥檙e able to examine how those same tensions still echo through American culture today.鈥
First performed in 1933 by Lorca鈥檚 university theatre troupe鈥疞a Barraca,鈥疊lood Wedding鈥痳eflects the playwright鈥檚 passion for the people of Spain and his belief that theatre should be accessible to all.
鈥淟orca was a scholar-artist who brought art to communities that had none,鈥 said鈥疶om Fish, Assistant Professor of Theatre and resident Dramaturg for the department. 鈥淗e believed theatre could speak to the deepest struggles of ordinary people. This production honors that legacy, not by recreating Spain, but by connecting Lorca鈥檚 universal themes of honor, family, and forbidden love to our own cultural landscape.鈥

Blood Wedding鈥痠s a monumental collaboration between KSU鈥檚 faculty, staff, and students across multiple design disciplines. Scenic design is by鈥疉lexander Whittenberg, costume design by鈥疪icky Greenwell, lighting design by鈥疍avid Reingold, and sound design by鈥疊ailey Gafeney.
鈥淧roductions like鈥疊lood Wedding鈥痵how the incredible depth and talent within our program,鈥 said鈥疌huck Meacham, chair of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies. 鈥淟orca鈥檚 work demands precision, poetry and courage from everyone involved. Our students rise to that challenge 鈥 and in doing so, they elevate the artistic standard of what university theatre can be.鈥
Blood Wedding鈥痜ollows a family whose secrets unravel on the eve of a wedding, leading to passion, betrayal, and tragedy beneath the light of the moon. With its mix of realism and symbolism, the play remains one of Lorca鈥檚 most haunting and poetic achievements.
